Bio:
Piers Beirne has a Ph.D in sociology from Durham University. He is Professor of Sociology and Legal Studies at the University of Southern Maine, where one of his courses is on animal abuse. He is founding co-editor of the journal Theoretical Criminology. Among his books are Criminology (2011, Oxford University Press, with James Messerschmidt); Confronting Animal Abuse (2009, Rowman & Littlefield); and Issues in Green Criminology (2007, Willan, with Nigel South). His current research lies at the juncture of art history and green criminology. In Michaelmas term, 2013, he will be a visiting fellow at the Centre for Criminology, Oxford University. He likes to wind surf and watch birds, though not usually at the same time.
